One characteristic by itself does not establish autism. The evaluation considers the complete developmental and functional pattern.
Autism can be overlooked in women and girls because their presentation may differ from traditional stereotypes.
Some autistic women develop strong masking or camouflaging strategies. They may carefully observe others, imitate social behavior, rehearse conversations, force eye contact or develop scripts for common situations. These strategies can make social difficulties less visible while requiring substantial mental effort.
Possible experiences include:
• Appearing socially capable but feeling confused or exhausted internally

• Having interests that appear typical in subject but are unusually intense

A careful evaluation considers internal experience, developmental history, masking and compensation—not only behaviors that are immediately visible during an appointment.
A comprehensive autism evaluation considers multiple sources of information rather than relying on one test, questionnaire or observation.

Standalone ADOS-2 Module 4 Assessment — $800
This focused service is available when a psychiatrist, psychologist, physician or other qualified healthcare provider has specifically requested an ADOS-2 Module 4 assessment.
It includes:
• Administration of ADOS-2 Module 4 activities
• Standardized scoring when standardized administration requirements are met
• Behavioral observations from the assessment
• A summary of findings provided to the requesting professional
The ADOS-2 is one source of clinical information. It cannot independently diagnose or rule out autism.
Results from a standalone ADOS-2 must be shared with the qualified provider who requested the assessment. That provider is responsible for integrating the results with developmental history, current functioning, clinical observations and other relevant information.
A standalone ADOS-2 does not include an independent autism diagnosis or a Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation from Bright Future Psychology.
Adult Diagnostic Autism Evaluation (CDE) — $1,700
This option provides a Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation, commonly called a CDE, focused on determining whether the available clinical findings support an autism diagnosis and identifying the adult’s individual strengths and support needs.
Depending on the referral questions, the evaluation generally includes:
• Detailed clinical and developmental interview
• Review of available educational and clinical records
• Autism-specific interviews, observations and rating scales
• Adaptive or functional assessment when appropriate
• Assessment of masking and social compensation
• Consideration of alternative and co-occurring conditions
• Diagnostic integration
• Autism diagnosis when supported
• Individualized recommendations
• Feedback consultation
• Comprehensive written diagnostic report
The evaluation may be completed virtually, in person or through a combination of both formats, depending on the selected measures, client location and documentation requirements.
Assessment batteries are individualized. An adult will not necessarily receive every measure listed below.

Measure selection depends on the individual’s history, communication style, referral questions and evaluation format.
Adult autism evaluations may be completed virtually, in person or through a combination of both formats.

• Interviews with a parent, partner or other knowledgeable person when authorized

A standardized, algorithm-scored ADOS-2 follows the test publisher’s standardized administration requirements. If ADOS-2 activities are modified for remote qualitative observation, the administration is identified as nonstandard, the standardized algorithm is not used, and the observations are interpreted as one part of the broader evaluation.
Autism and ADHD can share features such as difficulty initiating tasks, sensory sensitivities, intense interests, emotional dysregulation, restlessness or problems shifting attention. The two conditions can also occur together.
Some adults receive an ADHD diagnosis first and later recognize that it does not fully explain lifelong social, sensory or communication differences.
The diagnostic evaluation considers whether ADHD or another condition may provide an alternative or additional explanation. If extensive cognitive, attention, executive-function or learning testing is needed, we will discuss the appropriate separate comprehensive-evaluation option during the consultation.
Autistic adults can have a wide range of cognitive and academic profiles.
Some have dyslexia or another learning disability. Others are gifted or twice-exceptional and have strong reasoning abilities alongside difficulties with attention, executive functioning, adaptive functioning or social communication.
A comprehensive evaluation can identify both strengths and areas requiring support while considering how different conditions interact.
Autistic college and graduate students may seek evaluation because social, sensory, organizational or communication demands have become increasingly difficult.

Testing organizations establish their own documentation standards and make their own accommodation decisions. An evaluation cannot guarantee approval, a particular accommodation or a specific amount of extended time.
Applicants should review the receiving organization’s current requirements before scheduling and provide prior evaluation and accommodation records whenever possible.

Can autism be diagnosed for the first time in adulthood?
Yes. Many autistic adults were not identified during childhood. The evaluation examines developmental history as well as current social communication, sensory experiences, restricted or repetitive patterns, masking and functional needs.
Can the ADOS-2 diagnose autism by itself?
No. The ADOS-2 is one component of an autism assessment. Diagnosis requires integration of developmental history, current functioning, clinical observations and other relevant information.
Can I schedule only the ADOS-2?
Yes, when a psychiatrist, psychologist, physician or other qualified healthcare professional has specifically requested it. Results are shared with the requesting provider for integration into the broader evaluation.

Can an adult autism evaluation be completed virtually?

Does a successful career or advanced education rule out autism?
No. Some autistic adults compensate through intelligence, preparation, routines and masking. The evaluation considers the effort required to function, the developmental history and the individual’s internal experience—not only visible achievement.
